Summit Health Cares supports promising students with a passion for medicine and community service through the Next Generation Scholarship and the Dr. Marcia A. Sherman Scholarship.

SHC is working to equip the next generation of healthcare leaders to build a healthier, more equitable future. These scholarships award up to $2,500 to help relieve the financial burden surrounding that journey.

Summit Health Cares is committed to supporting the next generation of healthcare leaders. Unfortunately, many driven students are certain they want to pursue a career in medicine, only to realize the journey to get there is too expensive. That’s why we are proud to offer the SHC Next Generation Scholarship program aimed at relieving some of the financial burden for students pursuing health care careers, allowing them to focus on the ambitious paths ahead of them.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

• Must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or healthcare-related trade or certification program

• Must be pursuing a career in healthcare

• Must demonstrate motivation, perseverance, and a genuine desire to make a difference in healthcare (academic progress and improvement will be considered)

 

All applications must be received by April 17, 2026 at 5pm EST.

The Dr. Marcia A. Sherman Memorial Scholarship was started by John O’Neil in memory of his wife, who was a Summit Health physician. Dr. Sherman believed that the care doctors provide should meet the needs of all members of the community. The scholarship honors a female medical student of color who shares that same belief and embodies Dr. Sherman’s determination to overcome the obstacles that many newcomers face.

“I love medicine because it ties together the abstract and the real, the science and the human, expressed Ankitha Radakrishnan, the first recipient of the scholarship. “Regardless of the major advances the medicine will surely make, one thing will always be present in medicine: compassion.”
